The Mellon Foundation announced grants of $1 million to three theaters: Actors Theatre of Louisville, Long Wharf in New Haven and Portland Center Stage.

The Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven will host its final show this weekend at Sargent Drive — showcasing a play titled, "Flying Bird’s Diary" which tells the story of Flying Bird, a Mohegan woman who works to preserve her culture.

The Long Wharf Theatre will host a farewell ceremony and block party on Saturday as the theatre will soon leave its longtime home in New Haven after 57 years.

After six decades at its famed location, Long Wharf Theatre is not shutting its doors for good. Rather, it is transitioning to a new model of presenting works across New Haven.

The theatre company has been based at the New Haven Food Terminal for more than 50 years. It said its move will help it better serve the community, and break the cycle of ever-increasing costs of a physical space.
