New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that spectators will be allowed at horse and auto races at a 20% capacity beginning on April 22. That’s just in time for the opening of Belmont Stakes racing season.

Cuomo said that spectators will have to continue to go through health and safety protocols before entering events. They include face masks, social distancing and proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test.

“We caution New Yorkers: don't get cocky. The disease is still very much with us. You see it escalating in some states; you see it escalating in some countries. We have to stay smart until COVID is crushed,” Cuomo said.

New York Racing Association CEO Dave O'Rourke said he will announce ticketing options for fans after review of guidelines for tracks across the state.
