Schumer: FTC Needs To Crack Down On Scam Coronavirus Treatments

Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of N.Y. arrives for a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington last week.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York wants the Federal Trade Commission to do more to fight bogus coronavirus cures that he says are on the rise.

Schumer says his staff has found purported treatments like vitamin C injections, bee secretions, and sound waves.

So far the FTC has only sent warning letters.

Schumer wants the companies fined so they stop.

A vaccine for the coronavirus is still months away. One company peddling sonic treatments advertised that “specifically formulated sound waves…weaken the virus.”

The FTC requires companies to at least cite reliable scientific evidence before making such claims.
