East Quogue Set For PFAS Clean-Up

East Quogue Pine Barrens
Joshua Joseph
East Quogue is home to the Pine Barrens, as well as a 10-acre landfill.

The Town of Southampton says it will clean up a 10-acre landfill in East Quogue (kwag), Long Island, where toxic chemicals are found.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says ground water tests on the site found that it has a thousand times more PFOS chemicals than the state standard, among the highest levels on Long Island.

PFOS has been linked to cause cancer among other health impacts.

The state will require Southampton to investigate the extent and impact of the contamination at the expense of the town. The cost of the remediation program has not been determined yet.
