Long Island County Executives Steve Bellone and Laura Curran say they will step up police presence at county beaches this Memorial Day weekend. They will be making sure beach blankets are ten feet apart, masks are worn near the bathrooms, and checking IDs for people entering. Belone says only county residents may access county beaches.
“On a temporary basis it makes sense to ensure that the residents who are paying to staff, who are paying for those beaches, staffing them, have the ability to access them.”
Curran said she told Nassau police to have a friendly enforcement presence, checking the ID of only the driver, not everyone in the car. Also, MTA officials remind potential travelers this weekend that the trains are for essential workers, not beachgoers.
