CPS Caseload Comes Under Scrutiny After Death Of Valley Stream Boy

Child Protective Service agencies on Long Island have a higher caseload than other counties in the area. That’s according to New York state officials.

The New York State Office of Children and Family Services found 40% of Nassau County caseworkers exceeded their caseload in December. In Suffolk, the number was 12%.

Child advocate experts say this can mean caseworkers are overwhelmed and don’t have enough time to focus on individual cases.

CPS agencies on Long Island have come under criticism after the death of 8-year-old Thomas Valva from Valley Stream. The child’s biological father and his fiancée have been charged with second-degree murder.
