Mugshots of Michael Valva and Angela Pollina taken Friday after their arrest for the murder of Thomas Valva.

Suffolk County will investigate how the Department of Social Services handled allegations of parental abuse in the case of an 8-year-old boy who died last week in his father’s custody.

Investigators say NYPD Officer Michael Valva and his fiancée punished their children with food deprivation and exposure to the cold. The couple has denied these allegations.

Suffolk County Child Protective Services investigated child neglect allegations against the Valva family in 2018.

The county Internal Review Committee will examine the department’s actions and determine what steps need to be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
