Trump's Actions On Ukraine Qualify For Impeachment, Says Sen. Murphy

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.

Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut says President Donald Trump’s admission that he asked the President of Ukraine for dirt on a potential 2020 presidential rival is grounds for impeachment.

Murphy says impeachment is a function of the U.S. House of Representatives, and as a U.S. senator, he should not have a say. But Trump’s acknowledgement that he sought political dirt from Ukraine on former Vice President Joe Biden is serious grounds for impeachment.

“It doesn’t matter whether there was an explicit quid pro quo. What the President admitted to is a fundamentally corrupt act. And Republican and Democrats need to acknowledge that.”

Murphy is a member of the European subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He says he visited Ukraine earlier this month.

Murphy says the Ukrainian president acknowledged to him being pressured by Trump but assured him that he had no interest in interfering in American partisan politics.
