One of America's leading Impressionist painters, J. Alden Weir lived and worked at what is now Weir Farm National Historical Park, 60 acres of painterly woods, fields, and waterways just minutes from New Canaan. Park ranger Kristin Lessard will share Weir’s work and explain why his farm is a national legacy to American Impressionism, the creative spirit, and historic preservation.
In conjunction with our current gallery exhibition, Impressionism Then and Now: Dmitri Wright and the American Lineage, Lessard will highlight the park’s history, why it became part of the National Park Service, and how contemporary artists like Dmitri Wright use the park as a source of inspiration and creativity. See how Seymour's past influenced Seymour's present---
Join John Cilio--Connecticut Historian at the Seymour Library as he takes us on a journey back 175 years to the founding of a village that would become the town of Seymour--the state's one-hundred-forty-eighth town. We'll explore it's rapid growth from a village with the development of schools, churches, factories, mills, roads, banking and entrepreneurship along with the debate over its original name.
In this 50 minute presentation discover how the Civil War spurred the Soldiers' Bounty Fund, the rise of brass manufacturing, and the creation of the fire department after a series of fires in the 1880s. Learn how Seymour developed electricity, persevered through challenges like the Great White Hurricane of 1888, prohibition, world wars and the disaster of 1955.
Call the Library at 203-888-3903 for more information on this program. Registration is not necessary for this program.
