New York has certificated its election results this week — a month after Election Day due to a record number of absentee ballots that needed to be processes. The counting of those ballots only began days after polling locations closed in many local governments, including on Long Island.
The results revealed the precise vote margins for New York's Congressional Districts 1 and 2, where Republicans Lee Zeldin and Andrew Garbarino prevailed, according to the Associated Press.
In NY1, Zeldin received 42,279 more votes than Democratic challenger Nancy Goroff out of 370,441 votes cast (an 11.4% margin). In NY2, Garbarino got 23,230 more votes than Jackie Gordon, his Democratic opponent, out of 358,439 cast (a 6.5% margin).

Both Republicans claimed victory on Election Night with strong leads. Gordon and Goroff have since conceded.
Suburban voters in Nassau County cast nearly 70,000 more ballots for Democratic President-elect Joe Biden than Republican President Donald Trump. But in Suffolk County, Trump won — but only by a handful, 232 votes. In 2016, Trump won Suffolk by almost 50,000 votes.
“The farther you get from central cities — all over the country — the more Republican the vote gets," said Larry Levy, the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University. "And Long Island’s a microcosm of that.”
Final election results suggest support for Trump slipped on eastern Long Island, despite having 30,000 more voters in Suffolk County turn out for him, compared to the last election cycle.
Trump led in both counties on Election Day, but more Democrats voted by absentee ballot.
Biden carried New York overall by a hair under 2 million votes over President Donald Trump, roughly the same margin President Barack Obama achieved over Republican Mitt Romney in 2012.
