Bridgeport Police Chief Armando "A.J." Perez leaves the Brien McMahon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse out a back door on Thursday in Bridgeport, Conn. Perez was arrested Thursday on federal charges that he rigged the police chief hiring process.

A federal judge delayed sentencing for Bridgeport, Connecticut’s former police chief, who pleaded guilty to fraud and lying to the FBI.

Former chief Armando Perez was charged in September with rigging his own hiring process — with the help of the city’s personnel director — and lying to the FBI.

Perez was a close personal confidante of mayor Joe Ganim, who was re-elected in 2015 after spending seven years in federal prison for fraud. Ganim hired Perez, but hasn’t been directly implicated in the case.

The judge pushed Perez’s sentencing to February 25. The city’s former personnel director, who also pleaded guilty, is set to be sentenced in January.

Both men face up to two years in prison.
