Here’s the latest on the coronavirus outbreak in the region:
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has threatened to take action against local governments that fail to enforce COVID-19 violations. He targeted a Sweet 16 that became a superspreader event in Suffolk County that infected 37.
He also threatened to take away event permitting power for the Town of Southampton after a July concert. The state fined the concert organizer $20,000 today. Long Island and Westchester County, New York have COVID-19 positive rates around 1 percent.
In Connecticut, the state reported a 2.4 percent positive rate Tuesday. That’s the highest rate of infection since June. Hospitalizations have also increased but mortality rates have stayed low.
Governor Ned Lamont urges Connecticut residents to avoid large social gatherings that could become superspreader events.
At least two staff members and one person at a middle school in New Haven, Connecticut have tested positive for the virus. Nearly all students participate in remote learning. Also, at least one person is in quarantine after testing positive for the virus at Derby, Connecticut schools. The district is contact tracing. Classes will continue to be in person.
