Suffolk County police will increase their patrols on Fire Island.

Social media posts over the holiday weekend showed large crowds of people partying, without face masks or following social distancing rules.

County Executive Steve Bellone called the images “disturbing.”

“It is in so many ways, it’s just dumb. It really doesn’t make sense. The way that we will undo all of the progress we have already made is to stop using common sense, and not adhering to common sense measures.”

Long Island is set to enter Phase Four of reopening on Wednesday. Bellone says wearing face coverings in public is the best way Long Islanders can continue to make progress.

New York officials have threatened to roll back parts of Long Island’s reopening if officials do not enforce the state’s coronavirus safety measures.
