The Shinnecock Indian Nation on Long Island has received nearly $2 million from the federal CARES Act to help cover the cost of COVID-19 supplies, testing and utility bills.

The tribe has acquired a blood testing machine for the virus.

They run a food bank for the 700 Shinnecock who live on the reservation in Southampton.

Several members have been infected by the coronavirus, and at least two who live off-reservation have died from COVID-19.

Tribal leaders had criticized the Trump administration’s management of federal funds and resources that were allocated to for-profit indigenous-run corporations — instead of tribes themselves.
