Here’s the latest on the coronavirus outbreak in the region:
Connecticut has received from China its largest supply of PPE to date. Governor Lamont says the 60-day supply will help ensure that the state is better prepared to reopen on May 20th.
“Now we’ve got some security here, now we’ve got some inventory. Now we can give people confidence that we can get you the masks, and the gowns and the protective gear we need, as long as you use that appropriately.”
The PPE will be delivered to frontline workers, hospital staff and others.
The Connecticut congressional delegation wants more oversight for the distribution of the antiviral drug Remdesivir. It’s been approved for emergency use to treat COVID-19 patients. The state currently has about 30 cases of the drug.
Connecticut has 568 new cases of COVID-19, and another 33 people have died. The number of hospitalizations has declined for 18 days.
In New York, deaths have fallen below 200 for the second day in a row. New cases continue to drop with 1,430 more statewide. 250 were on Long Island, and under 100 were in Westchester County.
SUNY has created a task force to help students get back onto state university and college campuses in the fall as safely as possible.
Local sales tax collections on Long Island dropped 26% in April. That decline in revenue worsens big deficits for county budgets already stressed from handling response to the pandemic.
