New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says schools in the state remain closed for another two weeks, and likely another two weeks after that, depending on the progression of the coronavirus. At the same time, Cuomo also warned of education funding cuts.

Cuomo says the coronavirus shut down businesses and sucked tax revenue out of the state. He says the state government lost as much as $10 billion to $15 billion because people aren’t working.

The federal relief package would give $5 billion to the state government. And that can only be spent on the coronavirus.

“So when they didn’t give the state funding, all they did was cut the education budget to the state of New York, which is a tragedy,” Cuomo said.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer refuted this. Early this week he said the federal aid money is for hospitals and unemployed workers, not plugging state budget holes.

Schumer added that the MTA got $5 billion and that there will likely be future relief packages.
