Some Nassau County Schools Prepare For Distance Learning

Nassau County officials will work with area schools and colleges as they respond to the threat of the coronavirus. Two school bus drivers are among the confirmed cases.

County Executive Laura Curran says Nassau will do everything possible to ensure the safety of residents and students, faculty and staff in its 56 school districts and local colleges. That could mean temporary school closings that have connections to positive coronavirus cases.

Curran said continuity of instruction is also key.

Some teachers have asked if students have access to a computer with Wi-Fi for distance learning, if schools are closed for an extended period of time.

Curran says there’s another way to support students during this health crisis.

“Another way we can protect our kids, take that deep breath, stay calm, tell them the facts in an age-appropriate way, and then, just, tell them the truth. Everything is going to be okay. We’re going to be fine, and I think that will go a very long way as well.”

Schools would be scrubbed and disinfected while closed, as county health officials try to stop the spread of the virus in the school districts.
