Suffolk County plans to put government employees through more cybersecurity training. That’s the recommendation of a new report that found vulnerabilities in the county’s technology infrastructure.

Suffolk government employees will be required to take additional cybersecurity awareness training to make sure agencies are not vulnerable to phishing scams or other cyberattacks.

County Executive Steve Bellone says they need to stay ahead of this evolving threat.

“A successful cyberattack by one of these hackers is going to lock down information, is going to steal information, that could make individuals vulnerable and put the county in a position where you have to pay this ransomware, where municipalities are held hostage to hackers and in some cases have to pay millions of dollars in order to be able to retrieve their data and continue normal governmental operations.”

The report also recommends more coordination with local municipalities that struggle with similar cybersecurity threats.
