Residents in East Quogue will now be able to access the town of Southampton’s public water supply, after dozens of private wells showed signs of contamination from toxic chemicals like PFOS.
The $1.9 million project was funded by the town and the state. It will connect more than 100 property owners to the public water supply.
Tests in 2018 found signs of contamination in private wells. The town is investigating a former landfill and a nearby airport as possible sources for the cancer-linked chemicals.
The town will pay to connect individual homes to the main supply, which is regularly tested and is required to meet state and federal standards.
