U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut has responded to reports of vaping-related illnesses and deaths across the country by asking that the federal government spend more on e-cigarette research.

DeLauro is chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. In the 2020 federal budget bill she’s included a $40 million increase for the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention to study vaping and $100 million to improve the coordination of public health reporting.

“Our systems still rely on obsolete technologies like faxes and compact discs. To me this is evidence as to why we need $100 million in the House-passed bill.”

DeLauro spoke at a congressional hearing on vaping held by her committee.

The appropriations bill still has to be negotiated with the U.S. Senate.

DeLauro also has a bill to ban the online sales of e-cigarettes to children. That bill was just approved by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
