Municipalities Take Mosquito Precautions

The City of New London announced that all of its sponsored or supervised outdoor activities will end by dusk at 6:15 p.m.

This comes a day after the state health officials say an adult East Lyme resident tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

It’s the first confirmed case of the mosquito-borne virus in Connecticut this year.

Health officials say mosquitoes are most active during the dusk to dawn period.

Authorities in Groton, Ledyard, Stonington and North Stonington last week announced evening school sporting events were rescheduled or canceled.

EEE can be fatal in some cases. There is no cure for the virus.

Meanwhile, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services reported the first human cases of West Nile virus this season.

The two residents became ill in August and were hospitalized after they developed. They have both been discharged to recover at home.

West Nile can cause flu-like symptoms and is transmitted from mosquito bites.

There is no specific treatment for it.

The county reported 11 human cases of West Nile in 2018.
