New York teachers and most school employees will be banned from carrying guns in school. The move comes in a busy week for Governor Andrew Cuomo. He’s signed six gun-control laws in the past three days.
Schools in the state could previously allow anyone with written permission to carry a gun onto school grounds.
Now, only school security guards, resource officers and law enforcement can carry guns on school property.
President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association have advocated for arming teachers in the wake of several school shootings.
Cuomo says the answer to gun violence will never be more guns.
He’s signed several other gun control laws this week that extend the period of background checks on gun purchases, require safe gun storage in households with children under age 16, and bans for bump stock attachments and 3-D printed guns.
Cuomo also directed state police to expand their gun buyback program to include illegal, abandoned guns.
