The Long Island Rail Road will give people with disabilities extra help when boarding a train, with kiosks that will get the attention of railroad employees.
The Glen Head LIRR station will be the first to install a “Help Point” kiosk.
The kiosk will have a “boarding assistance” beacon that will let train crew members know a customer needs help, for example, to access a bridge plate to allow a wheelchair to cross the gap between the platform and the train.
The LIRR plans to install the kiosks at all of its stations.
Recently, a lawsuit was filed against the MTA. It says the commuter railroad violates the civil rights of people with disabilities for not having elevators at several stations.
