Sunrise Wind, in the waters south of Rhode Island, will generate enough clean energy to power more than half a million homes in New York.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and other elected officials rallied on Friday, Feb. 2., to call on lawmakers in Albany to advance support for Sunrise Wind, an offshore wind project proposed by Danish energy company Ørsted.

The South Fork Wind Farm has started to deliver power to Long Island. It’s the first large-scale offshore wind project to go online in the country, and an important step toward New York’s goal of installing 9-gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035.

Two Rhode Island historical organizations say the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management ignored the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act when approving the offshore wind projects in Connecticut and New York waters.

Orsted and Eversource received final federal approval from the Department of the Interior this week. Construction for Revolution Wind, the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in Connecticut and Rhode Island, will begin in 2024.

Orsted said they would invoke part of a harbor development agreement to handle the time-sensitive loadout of the wind turbine parts for their South Fork Wind project in New York. Their turbine supplier will handle the loadout until State Pier union members return to work in New London.

Members of the International Longshoremen Association began their strike at the State Pier in New London, Connecticut on Monday. The union says Orsted is ignoring their jurisdiction by giving jobs to their own workers.

It was part of a day of protests at ports across the world, spearheaded by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and its New London chapter.
