The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee has shot down a plan that would have closed the emergency room at Long Island's only VA hospital in Northport and relocated most services to other hospitals.

Upgrades at the West Haven facility would run into the hundreds of millions. In New London, a community-based outpatient VA clinic tripled in size to offer primary care and specialized care services to over 5,000 local veterans.

The only VA hospital on Long Island could face major service cuts if a federal proposal is approved.
