At least one person has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Suffolk County Board of Elections.
The counting of hundreds of absentee ballots has stopped temporarily while election officials take precautions to keep staff and observers safe. Both Democratic and Republican elections commissioners have self-quarantined and will be tested this week.
On Long Island, the seven-day positive test rate holds steady at 3.27%. The rest of New York is at 2.92%.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon joined a growing number of New York law enforcement that say they will not enforce Governor Andrew Cuomo's guidelines for Thanksgiving to curb the spread of the virus. Cuomo capped the number of people allowed at private house parties at 10.
Suffolk County police and County Executive Steve Bellone say they will ramp up enforcement. More than 100 people and Republican lawmakers gathered outside the Suffolk County administrative offices on Saturday to protest the Thanksgiving rules.
The seven-day positive COVID-19 test rate in Connecticut increased to 5.95%, according to data released by the state.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has increased restrictions on team sports, gyms and fitness centers. Starting Monday, masks are required at all gyms, and fitness classes are reduced to 25% capacity. All scrimmages, camps, clinics and informal athletic activities with more than four people are prohibited. School sports are already delayed until January 19.
The city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, is warning residents about fraudulent COVID-19 testing locations. The pop-up locations are unregulated and not registered with the state. Anybody who used these sites are asked to contact the Connecticut Department of Public Health Office of Facility Licensing and Investigations, at dphflisevents.ct.gov.
