On Long Island, cleanup of a contaminated ballfield in Bethpage is underway as New York regulators learn more of the extent of the contamination.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation sampled the soil last month and found toxic chemicals at levels 40 times the state’s target cleanup goals.
Defense manufacturer Northrop Grumman began the long-planned cleanup to remove the toxins in late August. Toxic chemicals contaminated the groundwater beneath the park from when the company’s Bethpage plant built jets for the Navy in the 1960s.
The Bethpage Community Park has been closed since 2002, and the additional cleanup that will be needed could delay its reopen.
