The coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force visited Connecticut on Thursday and urged residents to continue to wear face masks.
Dr. Deborah Birx is the coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force. She said Connecticut residents can prevent a spike in COVID-19 infections this fall.
“The spread of the virus now is not occurring so much in the workplace because people have taken precaution," Birx said. "It's happening in homes and social occasions and people gathering and taking their masks off. And letting down their guard and not physically distancing.”
Birx was in the state to meet with leaders at University of Connecticut. She commended the school for implementing an effective coronavirus surveillance system. Birx said even though UCONN staff welcomed back one of the largest student populations to campus, “they still have a very low number of cases.”
Birx's visit to Connecticut comes after President Donald Trump and several of his top aides have tested positive for COVID-19. She says she hasn’t been at the White House during the virus outbreak.
