US Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut says he will not treat President Donald Trump’s nominee to the US Supreme Court as legitimate.

Trump chose Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the US Appeals Court for the District of Columbia. Blumenthal is on the Senate Judiciary Committee that would vote on her confirmation.

He said voters should have a say in who chooses the next Supreme Court justice because Barrett would completely change the makeup of the nation’s highest court.

“Its center would be moved to the extreme far right by this nomination if Judge Barrett is confirmed and it would be for decades, indeed, generations to come.”

Blumenthal said Barrett is known to be against the Affordable Care Act and reproductive rights--issues that are set to be decided by the court.

Blumenthal acknowledged that Democrats can do little to stop the Republican majority in the US Senate from considering Trump’s nominee.
