High levels of dangerous chemicals have been found in the groundwater and soil at a former missile facility in Westhampton.

Suffolk County health officials say some tests done at the former BOMARC property show high levels of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

Adrienne Esposito is with Citizens Campaign for the Environment. She said officials should move fast to remove the chemicals.

“The public is being exposed not only in the drinking water, but also in the shower and the bathtub and in their food to these toxic chemicals. And the longer everybody waits, the more contamination exposure there is,” Esposito said.

Other contaminants were found in four underground wastewater containers. The state Department of Environmental Conservation will help the county clean up those sites.

Officials say the public drinking water supply is safe, and tests are underway at dozens of private wells.
