CT Football Player Gets Covid, Season Still Cancelled

Hundreds of football players and others rallied at the state capitol in Hartford in support of allowing the state high school football season to go ahead despite COVID-19 concerns. At least one has since tested positive for Covid-19.

The student is a football player at Meriden’s Maloney High School, but no other details have been made public about their identity. Local officials say the student was not symptomatic at the time of the rally and Connecticut Department of Public Health has notified anyone who was in close contact with the student. Still, state lawmakers in both parties have questioned the decision to cancel the season.

Connecticut’s high school athletic conference says it’s firm on its decision to cancel full-contact football for the school year. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference says it reaffirmed the decision made earlier this month that football is a high-risk sport.

The conference said the decision was made in alignment with the state Department of Public Health. The board said it would consider allowing football in the spring, if it doesn’t interfere with regular spring sports. Connecticut Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz, a football coach, said threats have been sent to public officials over the decision to cancel football.
