New York will set up two dozen new coronavirus testing sites – at houses of worship. It’s a new plan by the state to combat high infection rates in communities of color.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says the new sites will open this month at churches throughout the New York City area, including two churches in Nassau County.
“When you put the church-based sites together with the drive-through sites together with the walk-in testing sites, and our sites at public housing, the coverage will be extensive.”
Cuomo calls the partnership with faith leaders a creative way to combat high numbers of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations among black and Latino New Yorkers.
The participating churches will only serve as testing sites. Church services will continue to be held remotely.
