Suffolk County continues to lead New York in collection of local sales tax. That’s according to a report released this week by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
Suffolk County collected $1.5 billion in 2019 – 3.6% more than the year before.
Collections across the state totaled more than $18 billion last year.
Local sales tax rates are not the same statewide. New York City, Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island collect an additional rate that supports state-run commuter transportation.
Counties with higher population and more economic activity collect more in local sales taxes.
Westchester County had the largest year-over-year change at 12.6%.
