Siena Poll: Declining Support For New York’s Bail Changes

A new survey of New York voters shows that most people say a new law that eliminates cash bail for certain misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies is bad for the state.

The Siena College poll of 800 voters is in contrast to a poll taken in April that showed at least 60% of Democrats and independents supported the bill.

Now, independent voters have joined Republicans, and a handful of Democrats from Long Island and suburban communities, who want change.

Critics say judges should make individual bail decisions to prevent possibly dangerous criminals from getting back onto the streets.
