New York GOP React To Cuomo's Budget

Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, R-Smithtown, speaks in the Assembly Chamber at the state Capitol in Albany in 2019.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says his 2020 budget is both “progressive” and “fiscally sound,” but some New York lawmakers are concerned it could worsen the state’s $6 billion deficit.

Republicans say the $180 billion plan does not reflect the demands of all New Yorkers, just progressive advocates in Manhattan.

“Anybody who wanted progressive government, you’re going to have it rammed right down your throat in this budget. So I’m a little concerned at some of these prospective changes, but this is what progressivism is all about. So I’m nervous,” said State Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, a Republican from Smithtown.

Republican lawmakers want the state to limit spending to lower the budget deficit. New York spends more on resident services per capita than any other state.
