A new law about to go into effect in Branford, Connecticut, will take a tougher stance on plastic bags than existing state law.
Retailers beginning on Thursday will be prohibited from using all plastic checkout bags, even those designed and sold for multiple uses.
Stores will not be able to sell heavy-duty reusable bags that aren’t made of natural fibers.
Retailers will be able to charge a fee for recyclable paper bags. That fee will not apply to people who use food stamps and seniors over 65.
Retailers who violate the law will be subject to fines and mandatory community service.
