Lawmakers in Connecticut called on the federal government to enact stricter gun violence prevention measures after two mass shootings over the weekend.
Governor Ned Lamont and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal were among those at a rally in front of the state capitol in Hartford.
Lamont told gun control activists that Connecticut is a national leader on gun safety laws.
“It’s not gonna stand under our watch. Connecticut’s gonna continue to take the lead. We are right here fighting every day. And we are gonna put pressure on Washington, D.C., to make sure you have a chance to make a difference for us all.”
Blumenthal thanked advocacy groups like Newtown Action Alliance and Moms Demand Action.
“America is on the move against gun violence, and we are breaking the vise-like grip of the gun lobby on our Congress. And we need to keep up this fight. We are winning. You are making a difference.”
Connecticut’s U.S. congressional delegation has backed stronger gun laws, including bans on military-style assault weapons.
President Donald Trump tweeted in favor of stronger background check laws, but did not propose any new gun laws in an address to the nation Monday morning.
