Maria Barouch and Erin Daly-Spano speak on behalf of people with special needs, in Central Islip on Tuesday. The women are the relatives of Joseph Barouch, an autistic man who police say was abused by a worker at Life’s WORC, a group home in East Islip.";

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin of Long Island renewed his call for increased accountability at the New York Justice Center, which is charged with protecting and advocating on behalf of those with special needs.

Zeldin had asked the Department of Justice in December to investigate the Justice Center because of reports about abuse, sexual assault and deaths at group homes for people with special needs.

He renewed the call after more victims came forward.

“The Justice Center must take every possible measure to ensure abuses in these cases are not only investigated, but that systemic reforms are implemented, to prevent additional acts of abuse. It has a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable.”

He said the reforms should include more thorough background checks, cameras in the facilities, and increased pay and training for staff.

He said that the center hasn’t taken abuse allegations seriously enough.

The Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs released the following statement in response to this report:

“Every allegation of abuse and neglect reported to the Justice Center is thoroughly investigated to conclusion.  Every allegation is also referred to the local District Attorney for an independent review.  Any individual or provider found responsible is held accountable to the highest degree the law allows.

The Justice Center has spoken to Representative Zeldin’s staff and has, on numerous occasions, offered to meet with him directly to address his concerns.  It is unfortunate the Congressman seems more interested in grabbing headlines and attention than directly engaging with the agency he voted to create.”
