Residents in East Quogue, Long Island, want to declare independence from Southampton Town. This is their second try this year to incorporate themselves as a village.

East Quogue is a hamlet that falls under the jurisdiction of Southampton Town.

Their previous effort failed in June when Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman rejected their petition. He says it was incomplete and included the names of dead people.

The East Quogue Village Exploratory Committee filed a new petition with updated information.

Residents say incorporation will give them control over local land issues.

It’s up to town officials to decide what happens next. This could mean a public hearing and the supervisor’s approval to hold a referendum on village incorporation.
