Affordable Housing To Be Built On The East End

Lawmakers say eastern Long Island needs affordable housing to give people a place to live in the towns they work. They say workers can’t afford to pay rising property taxes, rents and mortgages.

Two residential communities are now under construction, one in Amagansett called Gansett Meadows, and another in Greenport called Vineyard View.

Both are considered housing that the average teacher, police officer and government worker can afford.

Rents could range from $950 to $2,300 a month based on the number of bedrooms and the tenant’s annual income. That's much lower than the going price for a home on the East End, which could cost hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.

Both communities are expected to be finished by the end of 2020.
