The German developer of a proposed wind farm 20 miles off of the South Fork of Long Island has withdrawn its plans that it submitted to the federal government.
The developer also urges the U.S. not to lease sites there.
The head of the developer’s local subsidiary, East Wind LLC, told Newsday wind turbine construction and operation could impact the fishing industry in the region.
Long Island environmentalists and fishermen opposed East Wind’s planned 100 turbines off the coast of Southampton and East Hampton — and at least two additional proposals for wind farms submitted by other developers in the area.
East Wind will shift its attention to waters to the west, from Long Beach to Patchogue, in New York.
