Sacred Heart University (SHU) says it has pulled out of a partnership with two other Connecticut colleges to take over buildings and academic programs at the financially strapped University of Bridgeport.

SHU President John Petillo made this known in a letter to his university community on Monday.

He said SHU was unable to move forward with the deal after due diligence was done on the Bridgeport programs and buildings it had wished to acquire.

SHU, Goodwin University in East Hartford and Paier College in Hamden had announced their partnership to take over parts of the troubled 97-year-old university in June.

Sacred Heart University is the licensee of WSHU.
