A coalition of New York police unions announced endorsements against several Democrat state senators, including three races on Long Island. The 23 unions include the large New York City PBA all the way down to the smaller state parks police union.
In total, the coalition says they have 200-thousand members, not including their family members, which represents a powerful political force. They are angry at Democrats in the state Senate for passing police reforms such as banning choke holds, bail reform, and —perhaps more importantly— making disciplinary records more public.
Noel DiGerolamo is head of the Suffolk County PBA. In an interview last week, he lashed out at Democrats for supporting the Black Lives Matter protesters: “It’s offensive that certain elected officials are too weak and cowardice to stand up and take action and unhandcuff their law enforcements and do not allow these terrorists--because that’s what they--to continue behaving like this.”
The police coalition is targeting six races, four Long Island, one in Westchester, and one in the Catskills.
