Connecticut has issued a COVID-19 alert for the Labor Day weekend as college students return to campus. The Department of Public Health is urging all residents, especially young adults, to take all necessary precautions for the long weekend.

Health experts say even small gatherings of family and friends at cook-outs, parties, and picnics can be major sources of infection.

The University of Connecticut says there have a total of 89 cumulative positive cases among residential  students, and 27 positive cases among commuter students.

Sacred Heart University students who live in private off-campus housing in Bridgeport will be required to attend classes virtually for the time being.  This comes after 10 students who were living off-campus tested positive. The situation will be re-evaluated over the weekend. There have been no positive cases in university housing.

Western Connecticut State University in Danbury closed its campus two weeks ago due to the outbreak in Danbury.

In New York, SUNY Oneonta closed its campus on Thursday for the rest of the semester after more than 100 students tested positive.
