Two Brookhaven firefighters have resigned after a Confederate flag was displayed on a ladder track during a drive-by parade in Patchogue.

They resigned after being suspended and after a hundred demonstrators protested the display of the flag.

The board of fire commissioners say that strict new guidelines for displaying flags and symbols on district property have been introduced. If they are violated, there will be severe penalties.

Brookhaven Fire Chief Peter Di Pinto Jr. says the flag was a “relic” from a competitive race team from the 1980s.

It is still not known whether the flag belonged to the department or the driver.
