State And Local Governments Can't Cover Deficits Without Federal Aid, Cuomo Says

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has called on Congress to provide $59 billion to the state to address what he calls “catastrophic” budget shortfalls related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cuomo said the federal funding would support safety renovations at LaGuardia and Kennedy airports and help close the MTA’s operating budget gap created by reduced ridership. He said it would also help local governments that are struggling from the economic shutdown.

“We need federal funding if we do not receive federal funding there is no way that the states and the local governments can cover the deficit,” he said.

Cuomo also wants Congress to temporarily eliminate the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions for homeowners.
