Nassau County has struck a deal with a Florida developer to take over immediate control of the Nassau Coliseum.

The deal with developer Nicholas Mastroianni will allow Nassau to recoup more than $2 million in unpaid rent from the Coliseum’s former operator. In 2015, Mastroianni helped finance the Nassau Coliseum’s $100 million renovation with Chinese investors.

In June, the former operator closed the Nassau Coliseum indefinitely until it found a new investor to take over that renovation debt.

The agreement also sets in motion the possibility that the New York Islanders hockey team could have a home rink on Long Island, while their new arena at Belmont Park is under construction.
