A statue of Christopher Columbus has been removed from a park in Connecticut’s largest city, days after city officials said they were working on a plan to keep it there.
Bridgeport, Connecticut, officials said they removed the statue from the city’s Seaside Park and put it in storage. They attributed the move to an abundance of caution for preservation of the historic artifact, as well as “modern-day sensitivities.”
Statues of Columbus have been removed, defaced and destroyed across the country in recent weeks. Protesters destroyed a statue in Baltimore over the weekend, and a statue was beheaded in Waterbury, Connecticut.
City council members said last week they were working on a plan to preserve the statue and add new ones to represent the city’s ethnic diversity.
