The sandwich store chain Subway has laid off 300 workers from its corporate headquarters in Mildford, Connecticut. The fast food restaurant has struggled in recent years, and employees expected the cuts.

Ever since they got rid of the $5 footlong, the franchise has declined in popularity. In the last two years, more than 2,200 stores have closed across the country. McDonald’s and Burger King went through similar cuts years ago as Americans steered away from fast food.

Milford police were called to the corporate headquarters as employees left. Milford Mayor Benjamin Blake says they are organizing to help with resumes and headshots for laid off workers.

Subway was unique in the industry where employees worked there for ten plus years.
