Suffolk County Task Force To Study Regional Approach To Recycling

Rogelio V. Solis

A new task force in Suffolk County will begin to look at ways to regionalize recycling practices across communities.

Kara Hahn is deputy presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature and chair of the Environment, Planning and Agriculture Committee.

“Clearly there has been a huge disruption in recycling over the last year or so with China pulling out of the market, and we have been hearing from constituents across Suffolk County as towns and villages struggle with what to do.”

Every community seems to have a different way to go about it, and they’re all facing challenges.

“Some programs are extremely successful. Shelter Island residents recycle over 73% of the wastestream that’s produced on the island. I think that is in part because it is so expensive to ship things on and off the island so that kind of builds in an incentive. But other communities are nowhere near as effective,” said Bridget Fleming, Suffolk County legislator from Sag Harbor.

The task force will come up with recommendations for a regionalized approach to recycling.

Hahn and Fleming spoke on WSHU’s The Full Story.
